This watch, you know, that Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Reverso Tribute Chronograph, it’s something else. I saw it, and I thought, “That’s a fancy-looking thing!” Like those rich folks wear, but, you know, not for us regular people. But then I saw one, not a real one, mind you, a copy, an imitation. And it got me thinking.

This imitation, it looked just like the real deal, this JLC Reverso. They call it “Reverso” cause it flips, I guess. Like a pancake, but much smaller and probably not as tasty. This one, it had that metal back, not the one with two faces. I saw this one fella talking about a Duoface one, two faces on one watch, who needs that? One face is enough trouble, two is just showing off, I say.

And they talk about a “Tribute” one, this Jaeger-LeCoultre. Like they’re paying their respects to some old watch, I reckon. And “Chronograph,” that’s a word I heard. Sounds like some kind of sickness. It’s for timing stuff, they say. Like how long it takes to boil an egg, but who needs a fancy watch for that? My old kitchen timer does just fine.

  • This Jaeger-LeCoultre, they say it’s for fancy folks.
  • “High-horology,” they call it. Sounds like a made-up word.
  • They say it’s like a Vacheron Constantin, or a Patek, whatever those are.

This fake one, this imitation, it was only like, a fraction of the real one. I saw someone say the real ones cost, like, near nine thousand dollars! Nine thousand! For a watch! You could buy a whole cow for that, maybe two, or even a car. I do not know how these people use money.

They say these Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are “Classic.” Classic like old Mrs. Henderson’s rocking chair, I suppose. Been around forever, seen a lot of things. But this watch, it’s all shiny and new, even the fake ones. I guess they make these copies cause folks like me, we like the look, but we ain’t got the money for the real thing.

I saw another fake one, had the same numbers on it as the real one. They do that to fool ya, I guess. Make you think you’re getting something special, but it’s just a trick. They call this number “reference number”. Like you are looking it up in a book or something. This fella I heard about, he got a fake one, didn’t know it was fake till later. He was all upset, naturally. Who wouldn’t be, getting tricked like that? Like buying a pig in a poke, you think it’s a fine pig, but it turns out to be a skinny runt.

Now, this one fella, he says this Reverso is a “sports watch.” A sports watch! Can you imagine? Wearing that thing while you’re, I don’t know, playing ball or something? It would get all scratched up. It is for “mature” people, whatever that means. He says he’s “mature enough” for it, not old. Just mature. Like a ripe tomato, I guess. But he also says he wears it with jeans and sneakers, those are sports shoes, right? I don’t get it.

They say this Jaeger-LeCoultre, it’s made by “watchmakers.” Not just regular folks, but special watchmakers. The “watchmaker’s watchmaker” that is what they call them. Like they’re the best of the best, the top dogs of the watch-making world. I always thought anyone can make a watch, but I guess I am wrong. It must be very difficult to make such a small thing.

It is rectangular, not round. That is why it is difficult to make it a “chronograph”, this sickness-sounding word. All the clocks I saw are round, this one is special, I guess.

Sixty-five years, they say. That’s a long time. Longer than I’ve been married, even. And this watch, this Jaeger-LeCoultre, it’s been around that long, or at least the idea of it. They say it is one of the most important watches ever. Ever! That is a very long time.

This imitation one, though, it’s not the same. It looks the same, maybe, but it ain’t the same. Like a store-bought pie compared to one made from scratch. You know the difference, even if you can’t put your finger on it. But still, for folks like me, it’s a way to have a little piece of that fancy world. Even if it’s just a little piece, and even if it’s not real. It is good enough.

I remember this other watch, Bulova, that’s the name. They say it is a good one, too. And it is cheap, not like this Jaeger-LeCoultre. Maybe I will get one of those someday. But this Imitation Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Reverso Tribute Chronograph Classic Style, it’s got a hold on me. It’s a dream, you know? A little dream on your wrist.
