Hey everyone, today I want to talk about my little project: imitating the Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Master Control Date. Yeah, I know, it sounds fancy, but stick with me here.
So, I started this whole thing because I’ve always been a fan of the JLC Master Control Date, especially that limited edition sector dial they released back in 2017 for the 25th anniversary of the Master Control line. I mean, those watches are like gold dust now, super collectible and way out of my budget. But a guy can dream, right?
I spent a good chunk of time just looking at pictures and reading about the watch. I learned that the current Master Control Date uses the new Caliber 899, which is like the heart of the watch, and it’s inside a 40mm steel case. Apparently, this Caliber 899 has been around in JLC’s lineup for a while, but it’s still a big deal.
Then I dove into forums and found people comparing different JLC models. Some folks were debating between the Master Control Date and the MUT Moon. They were saying the MUT Moon might be too formal, and honestly, I kind of agree. I wanted something a bit more versatile, you know?
I also stumbled upon some articles about the new Master Control Date and Calendar models in blue. They look pretty slick, but I’m more of a classic guy. And let’s be real, these watches are like an investment. Some people say they hold their value really well, like money in the bank. I don’t know much about that, but it sounds pretty good to me.
The design of the Master Control line is inspired by those classic 1950s watches, which is totally my style. I read that the collection was launched in 1992 as a tribute to JLC’s watchmaking heritage. That’s some serious history right there.
My Imitation Process
Now, about my imitation project. I decided to use a watch with a similar look and feel. I found a decent base watch that had a similar case size and a clean dial. It wasn’t a JLC, of course, but it had the right vibe.
- First, I focused on the dial. I managed to find a sector dial that was pretty close to the one on the 2017 limited edition. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave the watch that unique look I was going for.
- Next, I swapped out the hands. I found some hands that matched the style of the original JLC Master Control Date. It was a bit tricky to install them, but I got it done.
- I also changed the strap to a nice leather one. I think it gives the watch a more classic and refined look.
In the end, I created a watch that’s not a real JLC, but it captures the spirit of the Master Control Date, especially that limited edition sector dial. It’s my little homage to a watch I really admire.
I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s not the real deal, but it’s a fun project that let me get a taste of that JLC style without breaking the bank. Plus, I learned a lot about watches in the process, which is always a good thing.
So, that’s my story. It’s not about fooling anyone or pretending I have a luxury watch. It’s about appreciating the design and craftsmanship of the JLC Master Control Date and having a bit of fun with a DIY project. Hope you enjoyed my little adventure!
