Okay, so, I got this wild idea to try and remake a Patek Philippe watch. Yeah, I know, it sounds nuts, but just hear me out. I’m talking about the Gondolo 7042/100R-010, a real fancy piece. You know, you see these in the super high-end stores, and they cost a fortune.

First thing I did was to find out as much as I could about this watch. I mean, it’s not like they sell these at the corner store. Turns out, the Gondolo collection is named after some big-shot retailer in Rio, Gondolo & Labouriau. That’s a cool bit of history, right?

Then I started looking for prices, and man, it was mostly “Price on request.” But I did find some places listing it. These watches are no joke. I checked out this one site, it had a bunch of them, and let me tell you, they weren’t cheap.

Getting Down to Business

So, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I knew I couldn’t make an exact copy, but I wanted to get as close as I could. I found out the original has a rose gold case, is about 31 by 34.8 mm, and has a dial that’s just covered in diamonds. I’m talking 251 diamonds, people! Plus, the hands and the bezel are also decked out in diamonds.

  • Case: Rose gold, 31 x 34.8 mm
  • Dial: Paved with 251 diamonds
  • Hands and Bezel: Also set with diamonds
  • Movement: Caliber #215, with 18 jewels

I started by sketching out the design, trying to get all the details right. I used some materials I had lying around. I know it’s not the same, but hey, I did my best. I even tried to mimic the diamond look with some glitter and glue, because, you know, I don’t have a pile of diamonds just sitting around.

The movement was the hardest part. I mean, I’m not a watchmaker. But I found an old watch and took it apart, just to see how it all fits together. It was super complicated, but I managed to put something together that kinda looked like the inside of a fancy watch.

After a lot of trial and error, I finally had something that resembled the Gondolo 7042/100R-010. It wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty darn good for a homemade job. I even wore it around for a day, just to see how it felt. It felt good, man. Like I had a little piece of luxury on my wrist, even if it was just a homemade version.

So, that’s my story of trying to remake a Patek Philippe Gondolo. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot. Would I do it again? Maybe. But for now, I’m pretty happy with what I accomplished.
